Braille labels
A hotfoil label
printer can produce self adhesive Braille
labels that can be used by companies and large
organisations to communicate and provide guidance
to the visually impaired where and when needed.
The label printer can produce Braille labels in
a variety of sizes and on various materials with
a variety of adhesives.
The label printer prints Braille
labels differently to hotfoil labels. Normally
there are two plates in the label printer, there
is an internal block, which the design impression
is etched onto and a smooth plate, which goes
at the bottom. The label printer prints down using
the impressed block to create the design. In this
method of hotfoil printing there are two rolls
of material in the label printer, which are fed
through; there is a base material such as paper,
and then the hotfoil material.
In Braille label
printing, rather than printing a hotfoil material
down onto a base material, the label
printer prints the impression directly onto
the base material, or which in this case is the
prime material, this can be paper, vinyl, etc.
With a Braille label
printer there are two impressed blocks, which
fit together, a 'male' plate and a 'female' plate.
The male plate fits at the bottom of the label
printer and the female plate fits on top. The
'male' plate has a raised impression and the 'female'
plate has the impression inverted, which fit together
exactly so that when the plates come together,
the design is impressed onto the material. The
label printer only prints one label at a time
and so there are only one of each the 'male' and
'female' plates.
The translation for
Braille labels comes form the RNIB to convert
messages to Braille if there is not already a
Braille design in mind. The label printing method
for Braille labels is a special technique of embossing,
which is a method, developed by
Mercian Labels and is tested by an RNIB Braille
teacher. Braille labels can also be produced with
standard colour print included.
